Michael Carapiet – Chairman
Michael retired from Macquarie Group in July 2011 after a distinguished investment banking career, having first joined Macquarie in 1985. Michael held a number of senior appointments within the Macquarie Group including Executive Chairman of Macquarie Capital and Macquarie Securities and was a member of the Macquarie Group Executive Committee from 2005 to his retirement.
Michael is Chairperson of Link Group Limited, an ASX listed company that provides global technology-enabled administration solutions for some of Australia’s largest superannuation funds and the world’s largest corporations.
He is Chairperson of Insurance & Care NSW (icare). icare delivers insurance and care services to people with injuries under the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme, the Lifetime Care and Support Authority, the Dust Diseases Authority, the NSW Self Insurance Corporation (SICorp) and NSW Sporting Injuries Compensation Authority. With $30 billion in assets and $26 billion in liabilities, icare is the largest general insurance service provider in Australia.
Michael is Chairperson of Smartgroup Corporation Limited. Smartgroup is one of Australia’s leading salary packaging and novated leasing providers.
He is a board member of Infrastructure Australia and on the advisory board of Norton Rose Australia.
Michael holds a Masters of Business Administration from Macquarie University.
Michael Triguboff – Non Executive Director
Michael until recently was the controlling shareholder in MIR and institutional fund manager specialising in Asia Pacific equities. MIR strongly outperformed its peer group and was the recipient of many funds management awards, including Fund Manager of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Prior to MIR, Michael was Managing Director of Lazard Asset Management Pacific and Lazard Freres, a global investment bank, and was responsible for both funds management and principal private equity activities of Lazard in Asia Pacific
Prior to Lazard, for many years, Michael, whilst living in the US, was focussed on investing in distressed assets, first working for Soros’s funds and then for his own funds.
Michael has been a director in both private and public companies in Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, and the USA as wellas being Chairman or Vice-Chairman of a number of Debenture Holders’ Committees in the USA.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts from University of Sydney, a Bachelor of Laws from University of New South Wales, an MBA and APC from New York University, a Master of Business Systems and Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from Monash University, a Master of Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Columbia University, and a Master of Criminology from University of Sydney.
John Murphy – Managing Director
John was the founder and Managing Director of Investec Wentworth Private Equity and its predecessor funds. John has over 35 years experience in private equity, turnarounds, corporate finance, and accounting. John was a director of Investec Bank (Australia) Limited from 2004 until 2014. From October 2011 he transitioned to be a non executive director and was a member of the Investment , Audit and Risk committees .Prior to entering private equity in 1998, John spent over 25 years, including 14 as a senior partner in the corporate finance and recovery division of a global accounting firm.
John until October 2011 was the Managing Director of Investec Wentworth Private Equity Limited and from that date became a consultant to the Investec private equity funds. John sat on the boards of many of Investec Wentworth Private Equity’s portfolio companies and has extensive public and private company board experience.
His public company board experience includes the following listed companies: Ariadne Australia Limited, Staging Connections Group Limited, Vocus Communications Limited , Redflex Holdings Limited and Gale Pacific Limited. Over the last five years Mr Murphy was a non-executive director of the following listed companies Specialty Fashion Group Limited, Clearview Wealth Limited and Kresta Holdings Limited.
John holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Commerce from the University of NSW. He is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Greg Robertson – Executive Director
Greg has 30 years’ experience in business, encompassing turnaround and reconstruction, mergers, acquisitions and divestments, ASX listings, private equity investment, strategy, finance and law.
Greg had a seventeen year career (eight as a partner) with a global accounting firm, working for both lenders and companies on turnaround, reconstruction and insolvency projects in Australia, Asia and the UK. He was then Chief Operating Officer of an e-commerce services company for two years.
Greg then joined Investec in 2002 at the establishment of its Australian private equity funds management business. He was an executive director of those funds for 10 years. In this period, three successive wholesale private equity funds were raised with commitments totalling in excess of $500 million. These funds made over 20 principal investments with the investee companies making in excess of 50 separate acquisitions.
Greg had primary or joint responsibility for ten of these principal investments. The performance of two of these investments was recognised by the Australian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (AVCAL) as the “Best Expansion Investment”, in 2006 and 2009 respectively.
Greg has extensive experience as a director in both public and private companies. He remains non-executive chairman of one of the companies (an unlisted public company) within the investee portfolio of the funds for which he was previously an executive director.
Greg holds Bachelor degrees in Economics and Law from the Australian National University, and MBA from University of Technology Sydney, and is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Company Directors.
